The latest release of Scorewright is available now! We’re still in closed beta, so if you haven’t already, please register for access to try out these new features. This release includes:
Voices work on a measure-by-measure basis. To add a voice to a measure use the hotkey “V”. The second voice will appear underneath the first.
Notes can be placed in the lower voice the same way you’d do it for the primary (upper) voice. Just make sure you select the voice you want to interact with first.
For example, paint mode will place notes in the upper voice by default. If you click on a note in the lower voice before entering paint mode, it will place notes in the lower voice. It works the same way for keyboard note input.
When you first create a voice, all rests are shown in both voices, but when it’s already clear where notes begin, you may wish to hide excess rests in the final export of your score.
Above are two measures of Moonlight Sonata. The rests in the first measure are redundant and a little confusing, as the player doesn’t actually rest for any part of the measure. You can hide these rests by selecting the bars or individual rests and pressing “Ctrl+H”.
The rests turn translucent to indicate they are hidden. When the score is printed or exported, which can be done from the File menu, the rests will not appear at all.
You can swap the notes in one voice for the notes in the other with “Shift+V”.
Voices can be deleted with “Ctrl+Backspace”; this will remove all elements in the second voice and leave the bar with a single voice.
As usual, show/hide rests, add/delete voice, and swap voice are all available in the search bar, which can be quickly accessed with “Tab”. They are also available to be added to toolbelts under the “Measure” category.
This release includes whole measure rests, which greatly improve the readability and overall look of your score. Whole measure rests look like regular whole note rests, but they’re centered in the bar. They indicate that the player should rest for the entire bar, regardless of how many beats are in the bar.
By default, new measures will contain a single whole measure rest. It can be shortened with the decrease duration hotkey ”[”. You can also type notes on top of them or place notes with paint mode as usual.
If you select a bar and press “backspace” or “delete”, the contents of the measure will be replaced with a whole measure rest.
So far we’ve been in closed beta where we’ve asked you to register for access. With the completion of voices and whole measure rests, we’re nearly ready to enter open beta, where we’ll drop the registration requirement and you’ll be able to directly sign up. The open beta will last a few months until our full release later this year.
Our next focus will be on expanding our sign-in options in anticipation of the open beta. During the open beta we’ll keep bringing you new features, including lyrics, part printing, and lots more.
We love hearing your feedback! We take your feedback to heart and work to incorporate it into each release. If you haven’t already, check out the updates from our last release all about tuplets!
