MusicXML is a shared file type for sheet music.
Every music notation platform is able to translate to and from MusicXML, making it the perfect way to move your scores between different notation software.
The first step is to export it from the notation software where you made it. It varies by application, but you’ll usually find this option in a File > Export menu.
Once you have your score as a .mxl or .musicxml file, head to scorewright.com/scores and click the new “Import” button.
In the dialog that opens, upload your file. Once the conversion process is complete, click “Start Editing” to view and edit the score in Scorewright.
⚠️ This feature is in beta, meaning some scores with complex notation will encounter issues when imported via MusicXML, or not be imported at all. We’ll be working on improving our MusicXML support in the coming months.
Next up we’ll be working more on MusicXML to let you export your scores from Scorewright to other notation software. We’ll also be working on lyrics and pickup measures. Check our 2025 Roadmap for more about what we’ll be working on in the coming months.
We love hearing your feedback! We take your feedback to heart and work to incorporate it into each release. This release in particular was inspired mostly by user feedback we received on Reddit, and in our Discord server. Join us there to help shape the future of Scorewright! Thank you to everyone who has provided us with feedback so far.
If you haven’t already, check out the updates from our last release all about voices and whole measure rests!
